An Index of [Miss] in NYC
An Index of [Miss] in NYC documents the widespread use of “Miss” in storefront names across New York City. The word appears to point to a woman, yet never defines one. Repeated in commercial contexts, it carries personal suggestion without identity, allowing each reader to project their own memory, experience, or cultural reference onto it.
Through collection, classification, interviews, and editing, this project assembles these dispersed names into a structured index. Alphabetical entries, locations, and categories form a navigable framework, while fragments of reader impressions are interwoven throug
hout. The publication shifts away from linear reading toward a hyperlink-like structure, where index and impression continuously reposition one another, revealing how urban experience is labeled, stored, and recalled through language.
